Why Are We Asked to Wear Earth Tone Colors on Game Drives?
If you’ve ever prepared for an African safari, you’ve probably seen the same advice over and over again: “Wear neutral, earth tone colors—khaki, tan, olive green.” It’s become one of those “rules” of safari that everyone seems to follow without questioning. But here’s the truth: 👉 There’s really no strong biological reason animals care that you wear some bright colors. Let’s Talk About What Animals Actually See Most of the animals you’ll encounter on safari—especially mammal

Managing Jet Lag
I’ve just returned from a 10-day trip to Japan, where they are 13 hours ahead of us. Adjusting to that time difference can be a challenge. I used an app called TimeShifter to help manage the jet lag. I won’t go into all the details, but I’ve found it to be very helpful. Whether traveling to Africa, Europe, or Asia, I’ve noticed it’s always harder to adjust coming home than it is when arriving. I suspect that’s because the excitement of arrival makes it easier to push through

Navigating the Nairobi Airport
All international flights arrive at terminal 1a or terminal 1e. If you are on Kenya Air or KLM, you arrive at terminal 1A. Other airlines like BA, Lufthansa, and Qatar arrive at terminal 1e. 1A is bit nicer than 1e. Last night we arrived on Lufthansa to terminal 1E. We had stairs to exit the aircraft and then boarded a bus. This is normal for international flights and we did the same for arrival and departure in Frankfurt. Stairs can be hard for folks with mobility issues. Le

Great Migration Safari Checklist
Purchase your flight to Nairobi. Remember, the earlier you book, the less likely you are to accidentally end up in a different Nairobi—like the one in Idaho! Buy trip insurance. It's a good idea to insure your entire trip cost. But, at a minimum, you need emergency evacuation and medical insurance. Because getting stuck in a foreign country with a broken leg is not the kind of adventure anyone dreams of! Decide what, if any, activities you want to do on your free day in Nairo

Africa Reading List
Paula and I recommend the following books to read before you go on your safari: Cry of the Kalahari - This is the first of a non-fiction trilogy written by Mark and Delia Owens. The couple met at the University of Georgia in grad school (Go Dawgs.) The couple moved to the Kalahari desert to study brown hyena and desert lions. They document the trials and tribulations from their many years there. If you recognize the name, Delia wrote Where the Crawdads Sing. The Eye of the El

Packing for your African Safari
We have YouTube videos on what we pack here: https://youtu.be/k0dD7sM_Ir8 The great thing about packing for your safari is you don't need multiple changes of clothes. The camps will wash your clothes each day if you like. Ninety-nine percent of people over pack. I highly recommend only taking a carry on. You can do it. Clothing to pack: a light but warm jacket. It gets cold on morning game drives. fast drying long pants or leggings. a long sleeve shirt fast drying travel und
