Paula and I recommend the following books to read before you go on your safari:
Cry of the Kalahari - This is the first of a non-fiction trilogy written by Mark and Delia Owens. The couple met at the University of Georgia in grad school (Go Dawgs.) The couple moved to the Kalahari desert to study brown hyena and desert lions. They document the trials and tribulations from their many years there. If you recognize the name, Delia wrote Where the Crawdads Sing.
The Eye of the Elephant - this is the second book by the Owens. After being expelled from Botswana the Owens went to Zambia to continue their research. The book describes their battle to stop elephant poaching.
Circling the Sun - This is historical fiction written by Paula McLain. The author transports readers to Kenya in the 1920's. Learn about the adventures of Beryl Markham, an aviator extraordinaire.
One of Them by Eti Dayan. The author describes her experiencing living with the Masai for many years.
Facing the Lion - Growing Up Maasai on the African Savanna. This is an easy read by Joseph Lemasolai Lekuton.
Cathedral of the Wild - Stories of growing up in a South African game reserve by Boyd Varty.
An Immense World - learn about how animals experience world around them. By Ed Yong.
West with the Night - Autobiography by Beryl Markham.
Secrets of the Savanna - the third in the trilogy by Mark and Delia Owens
Out of Africa - Isak Dinesen. We have all seen the movie with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. We have the opportunity to visit Karen Blixson's home in Nairobi.
